Psychological laboratory research and testing files, 1935-1960.

Under the supervision of the Dept. of Mental Health, the Massachusetts Mental Health Center and its predecessors have been responsible for providing residential and outpatient care and treatment for mentally ill persons--prior to 1967 specializing in acute psychotic disorders and since then serving more generally the Boston metropolitan area. Psychometric examinations were administered by the hospital's psychological laboratory (also known as the Dept. of Psychology) to persons referred by staff, private physicians, or the Dept. of Mental Health, to determine general intelligence level and other psychological characteristics--resulting in the creation of this series of research and testing files. Files consist of testing materials, including blank tests, test props, manuals, and grading scales; case studies distributed for teaching or research; group therapy transcripts; research papers prepared by laboratory staff on topics such as LSD and lobotomy; files relating to Harvard medical students studying the center; data for experiments and research projects; and psychometric testing case files pulled from series (M-Ar)39X, and probably used for research purposes.
